People are people and reptiles are reptiles. Don't forget that. People
cannot look directly into the sun without harm, but lizards can... Lots of
lizards do too. Lizards can SEE ultraviolet and will react to it. Like they
will see marks on dewlaps or sides where we do not see them and recognise
thier kin that way. Bird even recognise their gender by UV in some cases, so
it might be the same in reptiles. many a reptilespecies, especially the
desert-ones will be much more active in UV because they now see things they
did not see before.. Like femoral gland products..
Now the relative amount of UV differs throughtout the day. In early morning
a much larger propoetion of the light may be ultraviolet. So, taking an
early sunbath is a way to get your dayly amount. Another point is that UV
does reach the forest floor in tropical rainforests, even scarrtered by
leaves etc. just like the other types of light..
If you keep your animals without this aspect of the natural spectrum it
robes them of a p[art of the input. Now imagine yourself in this position.
Imagine yourself living under these orange Sodium-pressure, traffic bulbs,
all your life...
