Hi everyone,

Well, I cant tell biologically what their eyes do about the sun,
but their coloration is vastly different (better) when exposed to
direct sunlight more than just some days ... I try to let some of my
Phelsuma have an outdoors stay in summer, and they love it - some
CB look like WC afterward, and this is confirmed by other breeders.
And in my room there is some sun on the cages depending on the hour
... guess where they will be sitting then ;-)

To compensate for this overall lack of sunlight I run a combo of
the different lamp-types: for an enclosure of 80/50/80 (cm) I use
one 15W UV 5.0 fluorescent lamp and one regular 15W daylight
fluorescent for the basic lighting (= about 14 hours a day), and
add in a 150W HQI-Lamp that runs only some hour around noontime,
thus simulating the higher natural intensity at that hour of the
day. And I turn off the HQI in wintertime, allowing for a cooler
"season" to stimulate their breeding rythms ... . Needless to say
that the Phelsuma will sit under the HQI as soon as it is turned
on, and show peak coloration all the while. In nature they will
often be found exposed to full sunlight, so I think they have no
problems at all to be exposed to direct sunlight ... as long as
they get the chance to choose a more secluded spot from time to
time.

Hope this helped,

regards Hartmut
