Just FYI, a friend of mine shipped a leopard gecko that died in shipping.
That is really the exception in our biz - I have been shipping with UPS since fall '01 and only have broken tails at worst. Before then I used Postal (for about three years) and Airborne (since I started out in 1993), that was the same. I did have one calamity with Delta shipping leos. This is shipping a couple thousand (guess), mostly one and two at a time.
They tracked the problem back to the fact that she had written PERISHABLE on all sides.
Wow! Using what shipper? What else was written on the box? Was the heat pack warm when the gecko arrived? I'd say this is a good guess about what happened, however, shipping is a complex process and anything from packing to being at the wrong temps, to the sensitivity of the gecko (age, health, genus) and/or getting bounced around too much is just one factor out of many.
It seems that although fragile is a good lable to put on, perishable is not. Because perishable goods are typically those that have to be refirgerated, her gecko was stored in a much cooler area than a normal package would have been, and her heat pack couldn't keep up with the ambient temp.
Perishable is pre-printed on my boxes, has been since I started. I have written on there right below in large black ink "No Extreme Temps" - maybe that is the difference. I also write "LIVE" all over the box on all visible sides, in large black letters circled in red.
Just a word of warning... we've learned not to use the lable "perishable" on live animal packages.
So far I think LIVE and American Flags are winners, along with No Extreme temps! I think some folks who are afraid to write what is on the box not using shippers who ship reptiles probably have a lot worse luck. Since I am an authorized UPS lizard shipper, I put the contents of the box on top as well, both common and scientific names and "Live harmless lizards" right underneath that. I would recommend using UPS or Postal if you are not authorized so you can write this info on the top of the box. Writing the scientific names fo reptiles on the box is required by the Lacy Act.

Turtle Homes recommends using labels with the US flag on them. It seems people don't like to see the flag upside down, so they stay upright more often. Here is a link to where you can print them. http://www.turtlehomes.org/usa/labels.htm and here is a link to their shipping page. http://www.turtlehomes.org/usa/shipping.shtml

Is there anything I could put on the box that would keep the drivers from treating my boxes like footballs? So far I have not had much luck with pre-printed red up arrows and Perishable on all four sides, LIVE circled in red, and THIS SIDE UP on the top of the box My boxes are 15x7x11 and are white in background color. Thanks for any tips!
