To be sure you have a way to add changes far in the future and still 
have the same starting point that created the gerbers for a launched 
product.   But having the symbols used in a design in a project 
directory (a copy of the library symbol) is a fine, open, flexible way 
to do things.

So to talk about that way, all the "required design information" 
references are in the schematic (projectname.sch), and the rest is in a 
relative project directory such as projectname.sch/project.

Should we make a default project directory and document it in the 
tutorials?  That's what I think John D. is suggesting.
