Hosting yourself can be a good idea, but you should use something better than basic business cable. Try for SDSL, equivalent, or better, and tell your ISP, in this case Cox, what you plan to do with it. That way they can work with you to get the service you need.

I think it will be easier. I have a business Cox connection and running servers is not a problem. I still have to find out about the reverse pointer part. The problem I had with all the hosting companies was not really the bandwidth per say but the resources (i.e. cpu/mysql) my site uses. I found it quite easy to find a company offering a ton of bandwidth but they switch their tune when my site starts to really get busy on the resource aspect. I am already running my website on my location without bandwidth problems. So I know that works fine. I just have to have a redirect page on my remote hosted webserver that redirects people to my local server. That is until I can get the DNS problem worked out. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Elliot Mednick Sent: Sunday, February 03, 2008 1:09 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [General-discussion] Hosting my own SAM website If your issue is with bandwidth, hosting your own DNS isn't going to solve it. Hosting your own web and whatever COULD help, if your Cablemodem (or whatever) can handle the upload bandwidth (not download bandwidth). I highly recommend, based on your questions, that you do NOT attempt to host your own DNS server. Use a provider (I use JanguarPC.com -- $17/month for a reseller account with full access to DNS), then point to your own web servers. Ed has a point though: most residential internet providers do not allow ANY server to be run. When they see your high upload usage, you may get a phone call. What exactly is the problem you are trying to solve? If your web host says you need higher bandwidth, what makes you think your residential service will be better? Maybe it is -- these days, high-bandwidth cablemodel is way cheaper than a commercial T1 line, but for a reason. Well, not a great reason, but they don't give bandwidth caps. --Elliot www.deliciousagony.com > -----Original Message----- > From: [email protected] > [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf > Of Kipp Gremillion > Sent: Sunday, February 03, 2008 1:58 PM > To: [email protected] > Subject: RE: [General-discussion] Hosting my own SAM website > > I am going to check with Cox on the reverse pointer now.
