Dedicated servers can be reasonable - in the $100 to $200 a month range for a decent server. I use FDC Servers, as they have unlimited bandwidth - but there are others.
I know where you are coming from as I was bumped from 1&1 and a couple of others before going to FDC and getting a dedicated server. If you site gets a lot of traffic, you may run into bandwidth issues hosting it yourself. In any event, I would use the DNS at your registrar to point to your servers (www.gremlinradio.com -> 70.169.82.143, mail.gremlinradio.com -> 70.169.82.143, etc.). Don't forget to modify your MX record for e-mail purposes. I am not sure if Cox will add a reverse PTR for you, but I believe they are the ones that have to do this - I know I had to have FDC add the reverse PTR for me.
