John:

I do agree with you that I can download hundreds of themes from themes.org.
And I have done that on my Linux box. But think of an average user who does
not know the differences between Sawfish, Window Maker, Black Box and other
Window Managers. And you also have the issue of which version of GTK to
use. It is not a problem for a Linux user who is familiar with it. But to a
Windows user who is a new comer to Linux-- all these terms such as Window
Managers, Desktop Environments, etc would be foreign.

The point is the default Ximian could be made much more attractive. You are
absolutely right that themes can be easily added to Ximian configs. And it
is very easy to do so from the Control Center once you have the themes
compatible to your Ximian desktop downloaded. But a new Linux user would
not know which themes to download to make it work with her new Ximian
desktop. My point is the default installation has to be attractive to the eyes.

By the way, my Ximian desktop on a P-III 700 MHz with 256MB SDRAM works a
lot faster than an XP on a P-IV 1.7GHz with 512 MB RDRAM :))
