what happens is that when you are swapping more than one computer with the 
cable modem, the 1st computer registeres it's MAC address with cox's DHCP 
server when it gets an IP address

if you unplug that computer and plug the other in, you didn't release the IP 
address lease with the DHCP server

what i used to do before i got my router is when in windows go to start and 
run then type in winipcfg and release the IP lease, then plug in your other 
computer and renew the address and it should work

it just won't work when the DHCP server thinks that it still has an IP lease 
out already with another MAC address
