This is true. Linux is a problem Microsoft can't buy away, and this has them scared. As a company, MS is in a bad place right now. There aren't many areas left for it to expand into, so it's having to fight twice as hard to hold onto the market share it does have. This is why they _need_ customers to upgrade from NT4 to Windows 2003. This is why there are flaws in NT4 that MS _will not_ fix (see http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/55/29985.html ). This is why they're willing to badmouth their own products, as long as they can bundle Linux in with the badmouthing and drive customers towards upgrading at the same time. They're trying their hardest to get customers to upgrade their NT4 servers to new machines with Win 2003. If they don't pry those old boxes away from the customers, the customers will put Linux on that older hardware and keep chugging along like they have been--which in this economy is the more apparent choice. Their only defence is FUD, and lots of it. > > "..Mr Veghte also says the functionality of Windows 2003 is far beyond Linux, > designed as a clone of Windows NT 4.0, a seven-year-old product. At least now they're trying to get creative with it. It's kind of funny, really. > The sad part is that the article is on Financial Times which is probably read > mostly by top executives who have very little knowledge of computing. After They may have very little knowledge of computing, but I'd guess that the readers of Financial Times have plenty experience seeing companies try to lie about their competitors to make themselves look better. :) > reading the article they wil probably think why experiment with LInux which > is based on a seven year-old technology and let's get on with Window$ 2003-- > the 21st century technology. > > Micro$oft makes me sick to my stomach. Microsoft makes me laugh. If you want someone to focus your disgust towards, focus it to the businesses and organizations that are more willing to give MS their money because "that's what everyone else is doing" rather than make a smarter invesment in Open Source applications. Focus your anger towards the governments that standardize on MS solutions because it's the "easy" thing to do, and because they're getting special (probably highly unethical) deals in back rooms. Microsoft has made a nice pile of pennies over the past few decades doing business the way they like to, and they're not going to change on their own. The only thing we can do is help push a market change from the demand side. -Tim
