I use a matrox 450 AGP card.  It was cheap and works well to suit my
purposes.  One thing I like about it is that Xfree supports it without
any extra drivers (unlike ATI, nvidia, etc.).

I decided on the KISS principal with the 450... Several ATI cards did
not work well for me on linux, so I went with Matrox since it is
"tried and true".  worked out of the box.  I would go for the AGP even
for 2d stuff...
