Nvidia actually works (2d) even with the xfree included drivers..its only if you want to play games and get 3d working like it should (DRI), you need to install the www.nvidia.com proprietary drivers. If you are using Mandrake then it works right off the bat, If you use gentoo you could always do a "emerge -k nvidia-kernel".
