I have been helping run a web development company in Baton Rouge called
Modiphy for about 3 years now. Most of the development we do is based on
open source technologies LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP).

Modiphy supports Linux because when it comes down to it; I make the
finial decisions on technical problems and for what we do Linux and open
source works, its more cost effective, and most importantly of all; its
what I know. I have never had to administer a windows based server and
if you gave me one to administer I would probably have to do some
documentation reading :)

I was once unemployed looking for work. And believe me it isn't easy
finding a technology job in Baton Rouge; especially one that will pay a
reasonable wage. I only made $9/hr my first job, but I was only 18 then
and I had no bills so it was a lot of cash to me.

I believe the reason you have seen programmers wages in the last few
years plummet is because of out of country outsourcing. The market is
flooded with Indian programmers willing to write code. And from what I
have heard it only costs $300/mo US to pay a programmer in India with a
4 year collage degree! So dose it make sense for me to pay an American
programmer $50/hr for the same work? Plus I'd imagine most of the
companies looking for a php developer are looking for someone that knows
php very well but is young so they don't have to fork out the cash.

I would agree with you on that, but also add that an overwhelming majority
of the open-source related positions available here are with small web
development houses (like yours) who couldn't afford to pay a salary even if
they wanted to. I worked for Netshapers briefly, you may have heard of
them. As soon as I got a salaried job, I left even though I would rather
have been doing open source development.
