Yep, did this just last weekend with a neighbor's broken XP box. It had a
corrupt ntfs file system and refused to boot. Mepis and Knoppix refused to
mount it read write but both were able to mount it read only. I used sftp to
move files to another linux box in the room. If I lacked another box, I
would have put another hard drive into save it.

If you are stuck on windoze, you then do what you have to and move the files
back. I'm told that just having the files is not always enough to make
things work. The guy who does IT for my parent's law firm told me it would
take him a week or so to get everything back together if they bought all new
equipment right away and did as he says. He had a year's worth of
incremental data in horrid formats from word and something called "extreme
server". Email was totally lost unless he could get the actual machines.
Has anyone ever heard of taking a whole week to recover 3 gb of word docs and
email?
