What MS did was not simply a smaller, easier understand version of PetStore. They are spreading misinformation by calling what they did "PetStore". It simply is not.
If MS wanted to genuinely port the application, they would need to implement the same design patterns and coding strategies which they did not. Now, if they want to demonstrate their own two-tier application they are free to do so but making a comparison to PetStore would be obviously unfair.
