It wasn't so long ago that +/ as "plus reduction" was
new and strange.

There is a  beneficial effect in thinking of / as "insert" 
rather than "reduce".  For a general function f it is 
sensible to think of f/ as "insert" but not as "reduce", 
because in the application of f/ it is quite possible 
that nothing is reduced.
