There is nothing to counter. The "welfare state" didn't cause new
orleans to get flooded.

But it had a lot to do with the way the residence just sat and waited for someone to do something for them. It's part of their culture now...

I've not seen any evidence that any significant number of people were sitting and waiting for anything. Many were led to believe that Katrina wasn't going to be any more dangerous than the numerous other hurricanes that they've survived. Others wanted to protect their homes from looters, or damage. And again, as has already been pointed out here a few times this past week, many had no place to go, and no means of getting there. If you have no transportation, little money, and no family or friends outside of the afflicted region, you can't go anywhere.

I'm sure its nice & convenient to blame those who remained behind for their current plight, rather than than holding their respective government officials responsible, but that is a rather disingenuous perspective.

Bush has had 5 years, and all he has to show are wars & natural
disasters, both of which were predicted in advance if only someone had
paid attention. Oh and an incredible amount of national division.

Division caused by who? Cripes, the democrates in my work STILL refuse to believe that they lost the election! You lost.... period.

Yes, the democrats lost. How is this nation better as a result?
