I've seen something like that when playing with the 2.5 kernel series (around 2.5.7x, I assume). The screen looked like an unsynced monitor, totally unreadable. > What laptop/LCD/Radeon do you have? Compaq Evo N800C, Radeon Mobility 7500 w/32MB RAM, built-in TFT running @1400x1050. Video-related kernel arguments are: video=radeonfb,mtrr,ywrap which works pretty smooth with the current gentoo-2.4.20 kernel. During boot, it starts with 40x80 text display, and switches over to 1400x1050 very soon.
