Sorry guys, this is almost completely offtopic but I thought someone in here
might be knowledgeable enough to help me out.

My LAN up until now ran on a DSL Modem that doubled as a four-port 10mbit
Network hub (It's a Nokia M1122). Today I bought a Speedcom 8-port 10/100
switching hub to plug all the computers into, for the speed, extra ports and
better security.

Now, it all works perfectly with all my LAN computers plugged into it and it
in turn plugged into to hub built in to the DSL modem. EXCEPT for one
computer. When I have it plugged into the switch it simply will not
communicate with *anything*. No pings either two or from any other
computers.

Unfortunately, his computer is an XP box (Intel, with what I think is an intel
motherboard) with a built in realtek network chipset. So that's the main
reason this is really offtopic.

This is out of my realm of experience... I was under the impression that
network switches were supposed to just *work*, and it certainly worked fine
for everyone else on the network!

There's a trust issue here as well. His computer only seems to work when
plugged into the DSL modem/hub and not the seperate switch. Which means he
could quite happily sniff away at all outgoing connections. Frankly, it was
to prevent this that I bought the switch in the first place! (It's still
possible to sniff on a switch, but as far as I understand it's impossible to
do it without being detected by tools such as 'arpwatch' or running 'ettercap
-Nc'.

Does anyone have any ideas as to what to try? I haven't tried a different
cable, but that doesn't really make sense since it works fine on the hub. Or
could it be the faster speed of the switch that's causing the cable to be a
problem?

I'm frustrated, out of ideas and don't really know where to turn to... I know
this isn't a gentoo question but didn't really have anywhere else to turn.

Thanks for any help you can give me!

        Tom
