You didn't use a cross-over cable instead of a straight one for that computer by any chance? It is possible that the hub autodetects that and adapts itself, while the switch doesn't.
I'm pretty sure it's the other way around... the switch is smart enough to adapt, and the hub is stupid.
Perhaps that sounds more sensible, but it wouldn't explain the observed behavior. Mind you, I'm not claiming that my explanation is the right one; it's just a possibilty. Weird behavior asks for creative explanations ;)
Oh, here's another clue: Although there was *no* successful pinging taking place the XP box *did* manage to at least resolve a MAC address occasionally, sometimes typing 'arp -a' in the shell (the equivalent of 'arp' in linux) did manage to get the right MAC address... other times it just printed the MAC as all zeros (00:00:00:etc)
That's his own MAC address, or the one from another computer?
I even tried turning off every computer in the house, the DSL router and the switch, which sucked coz I lost my 51 day uptime on my p133 gentoo server :-(
I feel the pain... I've found myself having to reboot my computer in order the change the parallel port to EPP for my scanner to work. Unsuccesfully, even.
