Bill sounds like he's on the right track. The other possibility is duplex. 
Almost all recent switches will auto-sense duplex and link speed so it's 
surprising if yours doesn't. However, both of those will cause the symptoms 
that you've described elsewhere. Go for the link speed first as half/full 
duplex should have worked, albeit with a lot of link errors, when all the 
other computers were off.
