Thanks everyone for all your help.  As it turns out my initial suspicion was 
correct... it was nothing more or less than a piece of s**t cable that 
couldn't handle 100Mbps.  Changing the cable or forcing the network card down 
to 10Mbs solved the problem.

I guess the moral of the story is that there's *definitely* something to be 
said for going wireless!
