No, that's not it. The javadocs must be built with java5, otherwise they won't build at all, but without that profile in the mix. I don't know exactly way, configuration contained in profiles should only add to the base one, instead in this case it seems to completely override the base configuration... And lots could be said about a build process that "only one person fully understands". Look at the 2.4.x release history: we have had no release since August 2007, yet there has been more than one reason to make more RCs. It's just that no one can spare the full day needed for a 2.4.x release (that's what it took me despite making the release from a NY machine with a blowing fast connection due to the confluence issues, build hiccups, and the plain fact that making all the announcements included in the release procedure takes a lot of time).
