Hi Martin,

One of the things that happens as developers work through a problem is
they get emotional - this it is a natural part of problem solving etc (I
took an course in OOPSLA where they went over such things; since that
course I have tried to be a little bit more relaxed about manners and
listen to what developers are trying to tell us).

So if we can hold off on talk of forks for a moment and figure out what
is going on; even a fork will not save you from the kind of frustration
expressed here (or visible any time you do a web search to see what
programmers are *doing*). Andrea is one of our top developers here; he
is one of the people that make GeoTools a joy to work on and work with.
About the only problem we ever had with him was when he scared someone
away with a code review (and that was honestly kind of funny).

Basically I need everyone here to make this thing work; and I honestly
love working with all of you :-) Seriously you guys all rock out.

Now the style of interaction Geomatys has with interacting with the
GeoTools project has been frustrating me for a little bit; I have tried
to be up front with that frustration - and several times had conference
calls etc where email was not working out. Adrian Custer has been good
at calling me out when my work has been frustrating him; sometimes we
worked that out on a conference call etc...

Martin can you please give us (your community) some more of your time;
even if it means taking parts in standards and some of your other
passions a little less - we miss you and we need your leadership on
several topics. We need your time on some referencing work.

For company directions (like JaxB and SE1.1) can you guys give us the
heads up and lay out a plan up front; we will do our best to work with
you - just like we do for other groups. These were strong technical
decisions that effect our planning for years; and I was not part of
making them - it does not feel fair or like you trust me.

It feels like geomatys is doing an end run around working with us when
changes pop up in GeoAPI (even in GeoAPI it feels bad when interfaces
appear before implementations; it is not something I want to see done to
GeoAPI).

Now in the past I had a problem where I was going around the community
by "fixing" stuff when upgrading Feature Model or with justin the Filter
model; I got called out and we set up a procedure to figure out
direction in public in the form of change procedures. It has been pretty
successful; but it was a procedure made (kindly) in large part to keep
me in check :-) We have a similar thing here; we should look at the
project procedures that are holding you back; and leading to friction
with the community.

Now if some of these topics are too close to the surface to talk about
on email for a few weeks; I would be happy to have a conference call or
something when I return to North America.

Does that make sense; don't fork; don't leave. Figure out what is
slowing you up and what can be done to correct for it. If people are
frustrated we need to listen to why they are frustrated.
Jody
PS. We are a library; I would love if we were a "pure" library and
focused on spatial and could let choices of glassfish or tomcat be made
at the application level. I understand that our decisions make that
harder or easier :-)
