Ah, it gets parsed by the CQL filter parser? Now that's odd, and probably
unintended.

Both require a geometry as a reference once the filter is parsed (at least
in the OGC model we work on, if you have time you could check if they
work if you pass them an Envelope, they might due to converters turning
it into a geometry on the fly during evaluation).
