Alan,
IMO:
The ASDD has been around for a number of years. I vaguely recall first
coming across it at least five years ago, probably more.
I have used it to 'discover' spatial data in the past when I was helping
others find suitable data for spatial analysis type tasks. I've been in a
more IT and systems oriented role for a number of years now, so I haven't
had the need to regularly use it apart from on an adhoc basis and to raise
awareness.
I know that its existence has been raised at a large number of seminars
that I've attended over the years and a number of collegues have discussed
using it.
Not having the stats, I can't comment as to its day to day use. Perhaps
someone from Geoscience Australia would like to comment (being the current
hosts).
I personally find the tool very useful, particularly as I can search the
metadata of a number of jurisdictions in one hit.
We intend registering our CSW catalogue (when its implemented) with the
ASDD to assist others to 'discover' our data as part of the current
project that I'm working on. We have much more data than has currently
been registered with the ASDD.

RE: [Geowanking] Metadata catalogues
Thanks Bruce,
A quick question, if I may: Do you, or anyone you know, actually use the
ASDD to “discover” data?
Cheers

[Geowanking] Metadata catalogues
Dear List,
Does any one have any real life production examples of metadata catalogues
in use?
I mean: where metadata has been created for a dataset, maintained and then
used in a catalogue by people to discover and get access to the dataset.
I know there are many projects that have attempted or proposed this – but
has anyone actually done, and continued to do, it?
Cheers
AlanK
“…And then came the grandest idea of all!
We actually made a map of the country, on the scale of a mile to the mile!
Have you used it much? I enquired.
It has never been spread out, yet, said Mein Herr:
the farmers objected:
they said it would cover the whole country, and shut out the sunlight!
So we now use the country itself, as its own map, and I assure you it does
nearly as well…”
