One thing that is a little embarrassing is watching a gerbil home, only to
see two same sex gerbils 'at it'. I have noticed that a lot of enquiries
from our web site are on this subject. Some think that their gerbils are
gay, while some people even think that they have a breeding pair and swear
blind that they have seen their "..gerbils at it." But later they are
disappointed and have to accept that the pair are in fact same sex.
I feel that this is one of the clearest ways though of seeing domination in
a gerbil home. Willow, one of our former female breeders is in a home with
three other females. Regularly she will be seen mounting the others, thus
marking them with her scent gland. Sometimes she will pursue another gerbil
for ages and mounting that poor gerbil again and again.
I would be interested to hear from anyone on this list that has observed
this activity and what conclusions you have formed. I am doing an item for
the next issue of our online extra magazine and would love to have input
from experienced ones on this list.
