>This is okay, however, because sterile isotonic saline solution is cheap
and pleantiful at the drug store--saline solution for contact lens users!
Now you have to be sure that it is ONLY saline. The box will list the
ingredients, and there should only be saline and preservatives listed.
Also, it usually just says sterile saline solution on the package. This
works very well for wound irrigation.<
I can't remember the recipe, either, and it's really good to know for
mission trips, etc. Anyway, sterile saline is the preferred solution for
wounds, as I said earlier. For human medicine we are really backing away
from peroxide for simple cleaning of wounds. I would only use 1/2 peroxide
and 1/2 saline and *only* if wound infection was evident--swelling, heat,
and purulent drainage (pus). Of course, thorough handwashing before and
after handling the injured gerbil's wounds...
Kelly, do you remember how to compound W.H.O. rehydration solution? I
remember seeing the instructions at an clinic for the working poor where I
volunteered. That might be something else useful for sick little dehydrated
gerbies.....Or, G-d forbid, sick little human gerbil siblings....
Maybe someone with a webpage will include minor emergency care (wound care,
treatment for shock, dehydration treatment) for gerbils? (Pardon my gaffe
if someone has it that I've missed...)
