I was once told by a vet that dog saliva is slightly antiseptic,
so we let him clean any wounds on himself. Trouble with dogs is
they get carried away and lick and lick until they make it worse.
Having dog and cat, I'm not particularly worried as the gerbils
are kept in the kids playroom and the cat is far too sensible ever
to be seen dead in there :-) The dog has brought us wildlife
before, including rabbits (greyhound cross = very fast dog!) and
on every occassion it has been carried so gently it's been totally
unharmed and able to run away fast. He's also getting old and I
doubt he would see an escapee due to the cateracts. As for the
gerbils roaming the rest of the house, the playroom is down a
couple of slippy steps from the hall and so far it hasn't happened
(and before anyone comments, yes I know that's not a good idea for
a playroom, but it was built as a study well before we got here!)
