If it is an  asymmetrical pattern not on the centre line of the gerbil
then this may be an example of the DPP phenomenon. I it is a symmetrical
pattern on the centreline of the gerbil it is almost certainly exact
what you describe. Instead of the fur being shaved off, it is a moult
effect. Gerbils shed and regrow their coat every few weeks. Some colours
show a distinct line, such as agoutis, where the coat grows, others,
like dove, often show a different colour. The area will change over a
few weeks if it is a moult effect. Let us know what happens.
