I would move the bottle to a usually clear area then....so they would
be less likely to mound it and make it drip....

Run your finger inside the bottle after emptying it.  If it feels like the
inside wall of an aquarium that's been up for awhile, that is what
I'm talking about.  It isn't visible until it starts turning green....which
can happen.

All waterbottles get the monthly swish in soapy water and exceedingly
well rinse rinse; and the daily water change keeps the slime down.  It
also allows me to catch where somebody chewed a miniscule hole
in their bottle that's allowing dripping, or something jamming up the
mechanism....causing the bottle to leak or not deliver water.

Besides, with the gerbies, this allows them to play 'crawl on the human'
while I am working on their cage...<g>
