Hi Tana,
I don't find age to be an issue in placing gerbils.
Since I don't ship, I meet everyone in-person. Unless
the child is a teen-ager, the contact is always
through the parents.
I've placed gerbils with four year olds "owners" (my
four year old is great with gerbils btw) and other
young children as long as the parents have the sense
to monitor and instruct the child. I find in these
cases that one or both parents are chomping at the bit
to get a pet for themselves, but bring along the
little one to justify!
I have had some wacky requests for gerbils, though:
- The teen who lived between mom and dad and whose
super-flighty mom was going to watch the critters
in-between his stays.
- The woman in one terse sentence looking for several
breeding pairs.
- And the one with the inability to get out a
comprehensive or grammically sensical sentence.
These are the cases where "I have no gerbils
available".
People who are "real" show that they've researched the
species and usually provide a story or background on
how they've come upon you and your clan. They usually
go back and forth several times asking good questions,
too.
Anyone else have good tips on who's "real" and
"unreal" stories to pass on?
Donna
