I got my first gerbil in second grade, so around age 7 or 8. I believe
it really helped me learn about responsibility. I learned a LOT from
having my first gerbil - I now have my second little girl (she's a gray
dove) and I'm sixteen now. Age four could be a little young just because
they're really too young to understand the concept of responsibility, but
it is possible with a mature child. But second grade (age 7 or 8) I
believe works out great! Just my opinion...
