Hi Staci --

Two mature females together when one has pups is a
very risky set up likely to lead to pups being
attacked or killed.  Gerbils are a matriarchical
society -- only one mature female to a breeding clan.
Sounds like you intervened just in time.  Removing the
other female was the right thing to do.

Do not put her back in the tank with the mom & pups!

If you don't have a water bottle you can use an apple
or carrot or celery for water for a day.  But it
sounds like you'll have to go pet store shopping right
away to give the lone female adequate housing.
