There is some anecdotal evidence of gerbils surviving after being
released, but the likelihodd is that most will die.
There's one thng you can do -- and that is call up your local wildlife
program and report your friend. She committed a crime, most likely, by
releasing non-native animals into the environment and abandoning pets. If
the gerbils do survive, they could muck up the local ecology something
fierce.
Yeah, no one likes to rat out their friends, but she shouldn't be dumping
animals in the woods, either.
