No, the boot mode is set before the kernel mounts the filesystem,
the only modes you can set as default are those supported by the
framebuffer driver. In the case of matroxfb, you are allowed to
give a full timing in the kernel boot commandline, e.g. what I have on
my machine that has a weird SoG fixed-rate monitor in my /etc/lilo.conf
is this:
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.7.fbdev
label=fbdev
append="isapnp_reserve_irq=14,15
video=matrox:vesa:794,sync:40,xres:1280,yres:1024,upper:33,lower:3,vslen:3,left:280,right:48,hslen:96,pixclock:9244"
read-only
However, you may also be able to use fbgetty to set the mode when
the login prompts are displayed, by replacing your vc's getty
program in /etc/inittab with an appropriate call to fbgetty.
