We have filed some bugs with at least one solution proposal: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=330099 https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=721184 IMHO all possible solutions be checked. Perhaps we find more in this thread. I'm for using the keyword 'performance' for all performance related issues in Bugzilla, so the related bugs could be fixed in one go. My 2p for now.
