Hi, I see the point of displaying the status of the selection but I don't think the statusbar will do for this. The statusbar is supposed to be used for context-sensitive information. GIMP 2.4 will also make a lot more use of the statusbar for displaying hints. I don't see how a static information such as "The selection outline is toggle off" would fit here. A toggle button similar to the quickmask toggle would perhaps do the trick. But then there are a bunch of such toggles in the view...
