Dear GKD Members,

What a splendid conversation...loaded with insights and from so many
different parts of the world: East meets West; North meets South!

In short, we are all wrestling with the same problem/opportunity...and
it is NOT about technology - well, not directly. Instead, it is about
the human system - the motivation of people (psychological divide), the
interaction between clusters/networks of people (sociological divide)
and the diversity of cultural perspectives (anthropological divide) -
not to mention the obvious technological or digital divide and the
inevitable economic divide.

Those of you familiar with the old 'Productivity Paradox' (i.e., why
don't we get greater performance - either in terms of productivity or
prosperity - from organizations when we pump in technological
'solutions'?) This is not a dissimilar question that is being queried
with the current discussion. And so, have we learned anything?

Indeed we have!

(1) With the focus on the Knowledge Economy, the agenda - one more about
learning/sharing/leveraging - has become one that is both human and
humane. There is a Knowledge Value Proposition that can balance the
three critical divides: Economic, Social (or Behavioral) and
Technological. It is impossible and suboptimal to discuss one without
realizing the automatic impact (and being impacted by) the other. This
may be best articulated in an article - "The Power of Innovation
Capital" - <http://www.entovation.com/gkp/power.htm>.

(2) The 'I' in ICT no longer stands for 'information' - or it need not.
Instead, the way knowledge becomes actionable is through the innovation
process. The original National Information Infrastructure - NII (that
became the GII) - was actually MORE about getting knowledge from the
point of origin to the point of need (i.e., to eradicate poverty) and/or
the point of business opportunity (i.e., global business networks). This
may be best described in an article - The Innovation SuperHighway -
<http://www.entovation.com/whatsnew/superhighway.htm>.

(3) And all of this activity has enabled far more sophisticated systems
(computers and communications technology) for knowledge sharing. The
new millennium is one of building 'collaborative - not competitive -
advantage'. The rules of the engagement have changed...significantly so.
With the asset of knowledge (growing - not getting used - as it is
shared), we have a chance to realize - in practice - a new economic
world order based upon knowledge, innovation, stakeholder success and
international collaboration....beyond just words.

I look forward to reactions and further postings...we are really onto
something powerful with the potential of combining purpose and economic
prosperity...what a novel idea?!

Always in your Network,

Debra
