As an experiment, I ordered two pair of reading glasses, which for me are a -10.50 and -10.75, with the same frame (#4508), from Zenni. For one pair, I got the standard 1.57 index lens, which cost $18.95; for the other, I got the 1.61 index lens, which cost $31.90. They are both thick, but there isn't enough difference between the two to be worth the extra cost, in my opinion. With a larger frame, of course, you might find the higher index worth it.
