Ed, I think it's a bit drastic to include hangaring of aircraft as an
alternative to corrosion inspection. There are many Ercoupes that aren't
hangared. Indeed, at the Provo, Utah Airport, where I kept my Coupe, it
was impossible to get a hangar. Should I then have been required to sell
the plane in order to comply with the AD? Sometimes we resist change just
because it's change. I'm certain that the Swiss Cheese AD created just as
much resistance as this current proposal. I can see it now, 'I'd much
rather see us have to remove the coverings every 5 years and inspect the
ribs and spars, than to have those damned holes cut in the fabric!!!'.
Let's at least be reasonable about what we suggest.

Larry

Please adopt the 5-year wings-removal method of controlling wing center
section corrosion in the upcoming AD.

* I bought an Ercoupe that was corrosion free.

* I used a mechanic who removed the interior and cleaned the center
section from the inside as part of his regular annual to inspect each part
of the plane.

* I have paid for keeping my plane in a hangar for 21 of the 23
years I have owned my Ercoupe in order to protect it against corrosion.

Last week, I took my Ercoupe to John Wright, Sr., for its annual
inspection. I personally saw how he inspected the center section using
mirror and flashlight. I was able to look in and observe how clearly a
mechanic can see the front and rear (from the mechanic's point of view)
sides of the ribs.
