I'm a bit older than Ron, and I drove my parents crazy
by hitch-hiking to the local airports, and then
putting out my thumb by the taxiway to cadge rides. It
worked, too!

I hate to be the one to have to say this, but in
today's litigious society, giving a kid (or adult) a
ride is taking on a huge liability. An aviation-savvy
attorney in our area advised us that, should anything
go awry (you know, the stuff we always practice for!),
the likely damage awards could financially destroy
you, or your heirs. Fortunately, the EAA's Young
Eagles program provides parental releases and
liability umbrella coverage, so when I see a kid
hanging on the fence, I advise them to return on
such-and-such a day and time and catch a Young Eagles
flight.

As much as I'd love to give rides to everyone, I can't
subject my family to the devastating consequences
should something go wrong. I wish it weren't so, but
that's how life in America has changed since those
days long ago.
