I think I'd check my rate of climb indicator. I have seen 2000 fpm more
than once. Fly that puppy up to 10,000 ft agl, cut power and see how long
it takes you to touch down. I guarantee it won't take 20 minutes to hit
the ground.

I have never seen 2000 fpm on my VSI, up or down. Power off, very slow
airspeed (45 mph) my plane sinks at about 500 feet per minute.

I guess I don't understand this. Slightly bigger sink rate. I think a
Coupe was much the same as my Colt. Power off, it wouldn't stall, as the
Coupe won't stall. Pull the yoke back, and it finally settles into a
normal
flying attitude. Look at the rate of clime indicator, and you're going
down
faster than you're going forward. About 2,000 fpm down. Wouldn't be a
pretty picture when you touched down.

larry.
When flying low speeds in a Coupe I noticed the diffrence load does to the
flying characteristics.
At full gross 1400 # , we have been probably heavier, the plane would
stall at
56 miles like adverstised - power off.
When flying alone I can get down to 45 and have no bigger punishment than
a
slightly bigger sink rate ( power off) .
I would not recomment flying 45 on final though.

I guess my Coupe was abnormal. It actually flew like the book says it
should. 58 mph was fall out of the sky speed-throttle off. I hear some
of
these 45-48 mph still flying speeds and wonder what you've done to make
the
plane outperform the published specifications.

Larry. Check your airspeed meter. I can fly my Coupe at 45 MPH with
tanks
half empty and just me in it
(190 ##) - no stall , full throttle though.
To repeat the story of our second Coupe: That one had an airspeed
meter
showing bullshit , someone put
a worthless piece of ยง$%t into his plane just to save some money.
arghh.
landing that plane at speeds
around 65 was only possible with full power on final. After
replacing
the
airspeed meter normal
readings appeared and normal behavior of the Coupe too.
I tried several times to land the plane at 60 - 70 like the book wants
it - all that ended just in a
very fast decent and a hard bounce. No good.
God knows what speed I was really flying. I had to hold 80 on final.
to
fly a normal approach. Of
course these 80 MPH were just a fiction - something what the
airspeed
meter was making up.
I think it is a very good idea to have the airspeed meter checked
from
time to time especially since
the coupe starts sinking when reaching lower speeds .
By the way . I believe this tendency to sink is just the trade off
needed
by design to keep the coupe
in a controllable flying condition at low speeds. The Cessnas might
be
better sail planes but they
probably stall then more abrupt, while Weick's planes are just
gently
lowering the noses and just lose
altitude.
If you know what to expect - I think Weick's planes are easier to deal
with.
So you might come down fast and land hard instead of stalling the
plane on
final - make your own
judgment.
(oh yes, I know Cessnas have flaps and ercoupes don't , I see it more
like
this: Cessnas need flaps and
Ercoupes don't)

If I had tried to fly around at 50 ias, I'd be on the ground. I get
so
tired of you guys telling me that you fly at 50, cause for me to do
that
I'd
have had to be at full throttle just to keep from falling out of the
sky.
It certainly wouldn't have been fun.

I'm with Hartmut.
I can fly around at below 50mph IAS all day and not
lose altitude with the correct throttle setting. Of
course that wouldn't be considered a normal cruise,
but it's certainly possible.
The original poster seemed to want to fly in cruise
with his buddies with their slower airplanes. This is
easily done (70-80 mph) with no harm to anything
except your sanity, you will be bored silly at those
speeds. The Coupes make much better use of their
ponies than most aircraft.
As for "falling out of the sky" at lower airspeeds,
why propagate that myth?? The Coupes sink more than
the notorious Cessna floaters that we are all trained
on, but that simply means it takes a couple of flights
to learn new habits. I quickly came to appreciate the
Coupes' characteristics and now dislike the Cessnas'
tendency to resist landing. My landings are
consistently much better with the Coupes.

That does not make sense.
When flying slow , the engine does not generate much
heat, the cowl
flaps on a Coupe are wide open all
the time and I doubt a extreme nose high attitude is
given at speeds at
around 85 MPH....
I find my Coupe extreme nose high with 45 MPH, but
would not consider
this a practical low speed flying
technique.
All other Speeds should allow for sufficient cooling
in regard to the
power setting.
