Thank-you for your answer. 

Well i do need that lab feature : the mail client "Sparrow" doesn't not 
show the different categories of Gmail inboxes. So to create the same, they 
have got to be labels. And the only way to have labels + automatic 
filtering, is using that lab feature...

If i used only the online Gmail application, i could do without, but using 
"Sparrow" is much, much better : simplicity of the interface, and only the 
minimum distraction. It's the best mail client i have encountered, and i 
wish i could go on using it, while using the Gmail automatic filters in 
order to get stuff out of the principal inbox. 

The categories shown on the left hand side, as you say, serve another 
function.
