I'm using an HP 812C at home in conjunction with
an HP JetDirect (150 I think) print server. A few
of the printers in the 800 series use a proprietary
HP print language (PPL or PPA something like that).
There are some experimental print drivers for this
protocol. A search on RedHat's support page should
point you to them. I forget which 800 models use
this proprietary language.
However, the 812C is not one of those beasts. I'm
using the standard Ghostscript cdj500 driver and
it prints fine (only at 300x300 though!). I'm
pretty sure I'm not getting all the bells and whistles
that the 812C advertises regarding printing photo quality,
but it works fine as a typical color printer under
Linux. I can't recall if my 812C has a USB port but
I'm definitely using it's parallel port to connect
to my JetDirect.
Personally, I've tried a few HP products. Although
in general I like them, HP is not very Linux friendly.
If you're in the market for a new piece of equipment
make sure it's listed in the Hardware-HOWTO and check
the vendor's page for Linux support (HP in this case).
