I'd be very careful about generalizations like that (haven't you
heard that all generalizations are false ?). I was looking up
printer drivers for somebody else the other day, for an 820Cse, and sure
enough there's NT 4.0 drivers. 
 
There is even a project out there for Linux drivers for some of these
printers. I appologize I don't have the URL, but a search at your favorite
search engine should turn something up.

FWIW, even though they are called 'Win' printers they are not as bad as
'Win' modems. I wouldn't suggest buying one, but people seem to have had
some luck working out the protocol they use.
