It could also be a bug in gnome-terminal. The GNOME suite is pretty neat (I
use it myself), but it isn't exactly what I would call "highly robust".
Especially since Red Hat has a tendency to include things before they're quite
ready for prime time [1]...
Anyway, have you tried using an alternate terminal program, such as good old
fashioned xterm?
