Don't know if this'll help, but I don't see the problem in Eterm on
RH 6.1 system.  However, I started a konsole (from KDE) in the Eterm,
then ran and exited vi, and noticed it did have the character c.  I
also noticed that the konsole spit out an error message thusly:

        undecodable token: \1b[>

upon starting vi.  My gnome-terminal (from helix-gnome) did
not exhibit this behaviour.
