Absolutely - I realized as soon as I sent that message that I'd
forgotten to mention that the terminal emulator itself could be
to blame, though I wasn't aware that GNOME didn't just use good
old Xterm.

A fine suggestion, and very easy to test - just say "xterm" from a
shell running within whatever terminal emulator you're seeing the
problem in, and then start&exit vi from within that Xterm window.
