Hmmm... this problem has persisted through several different ink
cartridges.  I don't know that changing again will help (this one is
itself pretty new), and after all they do cost about $35 or so.  

I'll concede that it seems possible that having not cleaned the printer
before might have clogged some of the jets on this cartridge and likewise
earlier ones, but $35 is $35!
