I notice that when my friends with AOL are connected
to AOL, their computers seem to be fully IP connected
and fully IP-capable. That is, I can minimize the AOL
window (but leave all the AOL glop running) and proceed
to use all the IP-capable software that their Windows
boxes are normally equipped with; I can run telnet,
ftp and NetScape to my heart's content and even ping
their Windows box from elsewhere on the Net. I assume
that it's likely that the "free" services might have the
same behavior. This would seem to imply that you could
setup your Windows box with some NAT or masquerading
software, connect to some free Windows-specific ISP
and then hook up a Linux box behind it, right?
If that doesn't wash, I can recommend world.std.com
